Mark Alexander is entering his 13th year in the coaching profession and 5th at MRA. After spending two seasons as an assistant coach for the girl’s basketball program, Alexander moved to the boy’s program three years ago. He serves as the junior high head coach and high school assistant coach. In addition, he is the golf coach and sports information director. The Jackson native played basketball at Belhaven for one year before transferring to Mississippi State, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Sports Communication. He was a manager for the men’s basketball team, which won the SEC championship in 1991 under Richard Williams. Alexander was a sports writer for 15 years, working at The Starkville Daily News and The Clarion-Ledger, and also dabbled in sports radio prior to joining the coaching ranks. He came to MRA after spending three seasons at Starkville Academy, where he was the boy’s high school and junior high head basketball coach and golf coach. In 2012-13, Alexander was named the area coach of the year by the Starkville Daily News and Columbus Dispatch after leading the Volunteers to their first winning season in five years. Starkville Academy finished third in the state in Division II that season and advanced to the Academy AAA state tournament for the first time in nine years. Alexander coached at Manchester for one season, leading the Mavericks to 17 wins and garnering District coach of the year honors. Prior to returning back to his home state, Alexander coached at Silverdale Baptist Academy and Tennessee Temple Academy in Chattanooga, TN. At Tennessee Temple, he served as the athletic director and boy’s and girl’s head basketball coach in his final year after serving numerous other roles his first two years there. He was the lead assistant for the boy’s team during back-to-back Class A State tournament appearances. In 2008-09, Alexander was named the District coach of the year after guiding the Lady Crusaders to 17 wins and a share of the district title in his first season as head coach. Along with his experience in basketball and golf, he has also coached football, girl’s fast-pitch softball, volleyball and cross country. He has two sons, Ryan (21) and Landon (11).
